Connecting to Department Printers

See below for instructions on how to connect the Philosophy copier and/or color printer to a macOS or Windows system.

To be able to add either of these machines to your computer, you must be on either the campus Wi-Fi or ethernet connection, or connected the the VPN if you're working from home.

If you run into any issues, email the support team at dahhelp@ucsd.edu!

macOS system

These instructions are based on a system using Big Sur 11.5.2. Older versions may be slightly different.

1

Open your System Preferences window and search for or click on the Printers & Scanners icon

2

Click on the + icon on the lower-left side on the Printers & Scanners window. If your system is locked because of your security settings, there may be a padlock icon below the + icon. Click on it and enter your system password to unlock this settings page.

3

On the Add Printer screen that pops up, click on the middle icon of the three icons along the top of the screen.

4

On the IP window, there are several changes to make

5

2. The Protocol section has a drop down box with several choices. I've had the most success by selecting HP Jetdirect - Socket. If you're unable to add the printer at the end of this whole process, you will need to select one of the other options. This can take a few tries to get right.

6

3. If you want, you can change the Name of the printer to something more recognizable to you by selecting and changing the text in the Name entry field. This is not necessary as it defaults to the information entered into the Address field above.

4. If everything pretty closely matches this image, then click Add

6.1

If you see this screen, click Continue and go back to step 5 and change your selection from the Protocol list.

7

If you get to this screen, the copier or printer should be ready to go! I have noticed that the icon for the copier can sometimes show a red circle and indicate that the machine is out of paper. Don't pay attention to it, it seems to be a glitch that I need to figure out.

When you go to print a document, just make sure to select the correct printer/copier that you want to print to.

Start over with step 2 if you want to add another printer.

Windows systems

The machine being used is using Windows 10 Pro 20H2, older versions may be slightly different

1

Click on the search bar on the bottom left of your screen and start typing in Printers & Scanners. The Printers & Scanners icon should show up on top of the list. If you don't see the search bar  on the bottom left, just click on the Widows icon or the Windows key on your keyboard and start typing.

2

Click on the Add a printer or scanner on the window that pops up.

3

This step can be a little confusing. A list starts to appear that shows a lot of available printers, none of them being the one you need. Start scrolling down the list until...

4

... you see the The printer that I want isn't listed link. Click on that link

5

On the following window, click the Add a printer using TCP/IP... option and click Next

6

Enter copy-phil-01 (preferred method) or 172.16.16.34 for the copier or NPI765AE7 or 172.16.165.35 for the color printer and click Next

7

If you see this screen, select the Replace the current driver option and click Next

8

If you want, you can change the name to something more recognizable or you can leave it as is. Click Next

9

You should see this screen for a few seconds

10

No need to change anything here, click Next

11

If all goes well, you should see this screen. Click the Print a test page if you want, but it should be working at this point. Regardless, click Finish.

When you go to print a document, just make sure to select the correct printer/copier that you want to print to.

Start over with step 1 if you want to add another printer.
